DIY // Leaf trinket bowls

As I shared in my latest Link Love post I recently discovered Dainty Diaries on Youtube and ever since I have been completely hooked on getting back into DIY’s and little projects around the house. One of the first little DIY projects I gave a try was for these super cute leaf trinket bowls inspired by this video and I just loved how they turned out, so I wanted to share the result with you guys.

The trinket bowls are so easy to make – even kids can do it – and you only really need to go get air drying clay and a leaf to make them (it is so much fun to decorate them as well though), oh and don’t worry if they end up a bit “rustic” looking, it is all part of the charm ♥

What you’ll need:
Airdrying clay (I got mine at Søstrene Grene)
A rolling pin (or a bottle etc.)
Leaves
A knife
Bowls

Optional:
Paint
Glitter
Sealer
paint brushes

Directions:
Start by rolling out your clay on a flat surface, make sure to roll it evenly and try to aim for a thickness of around 0.3-0.4 cm. – for the smaller bowls I made them a bit thinner, but for durability I made the bigger bowl slightly thicker.

Add the leaf to the clay and make sure to press it in tight to get all the details properly imprinted into the clay – I used the rolling pin to apply the pressure evenly and really get it in there.

Use a knife to carefully cut around the edges of the leaf and then remove the excess clay surrounding it. Remove the real leaf and then gently lift the clay leaf and place into a bowl like shown in the photo above to help shape it. I lined the bowl with parchment paper, but it wasn’t necessary as the clay is easy to get out of the bowls without it.

Leave the clay to set in the bowls until it is completely dry, this usually takes 24-48 hours depending on how thick your creations are.

When the clay has set all there is left to do is to decorate your leaf bowls – only your imagination sets the limits! I chose to paint mine in a vintage white color and then add gold details with gold paint and bit of glitter. To finish it off I made sure to give two coats of sealer to protect it when in use.

I also made a third bowl that I simply spray painted a shiny gold metallic color as shown in the last photo – this was the absolute easiest and fastest way to decorate the bowls, but I really love the details of the hand painted ones.
