What to look for when buying matcha + my favorite matcha brands

DSC_1107

I absolutely LOVE my matcha and I have a cup of matcha tea or a matcha latte every single day, which those of you who follow me on Instagram are probably already very aware of – sorry about the matcha spam you guys! Because of my very obvious love for matcha I often get questions about what matcha brands that I can recommend and what to look for when buying matcha, so I thought I would do a little post on it for you guys.

When purchasing matcha it is very important to make sure that it is good quality or you will not fully reap all its amazing benefits – I have written more about the nutritional- and health benefits + why I love matcha so much right here!

I will always recommend buying organic matcha that is ceremonial grade and from Japan. You can buy culinary/food grade matcha for baking and recipe experiments, but for making tea and lattes (and if you want all the nutritional- & health benefits) I really recommend buying the ceremonial grade matcha for the highest quality and purity.

If you buy organic ceremonial grade matcha, then you should have some quality matcha on your hands, but sadly not all brands are as high quality as they would like to appear. One thing to look for is that the matcha powder should have a very vibrant green color, if it has a yellow/brownish hue then it is not good quality. High quality matcha has a mild and creamy flavour and should not be bitter.

Another thing to keep an eye on is the price as good quality matcha is sadly not cheap, if it seems too good to be true, then it usually is. However, I have found a couple of more budget friendly matcha brands that have really impressed me, so while matcha will never be cheap, then it doesn’t have to break the bank! I have shared my favorite brands below (Rishi is the most affordable one), but there are so many brands out there that I haven’t tried that is probably just as good, so just use the tips above before buying and you should be all good ♥

My favorite matcha brands

BYOH
This was actually the first matcha that I ever tried and it is still one of my absolute favorites. It is a bit pricy, but the quality is well worth it and I keep buying it again and again. I usually always buy it online, but it doesn’t seem to be available anywhere right now. I am not sure what is going on, but I will contact the brand and hopefully update this post asap with a link to where you can buy it!

Clearspring
I was sent this brand of matcha by Naturesource as a gift earlier this month, I usually don’t accept PR gifts, but a lot of my favorite bloggers swear by this matcha brand, so I thought I would check it out and I was not disappointed. It checks all the above mentioned boxes and I really like its mild flavor and cute packaging.

I have already used it all, but since this brand – as the only one of my favorites – are actually available in some of my local stores, then I will thankfully be able to pick up some more tomorrow. Haha I can’t go for too long without my matcha! ;) I have ordered more of the Rishi matcha (see below) as well, but it is shipped from the US, so I will have to wait a week before it gets here.

Rishi
I am completely obsessed with iHerb at the moment and I of course had to try some new matcha brands from their site as well. My favorite one is from Rishi and it is just such a great quality product that is also very reasonably priced for ceremonial grade matcha. I have just put in a big iHerb order and half of it is boxes of Rishi matcha!

Organic Burst
Organic Burst is the first superfood brand that I ever tried and I really love all their products – especially the spirulina pills, I am obsessed! I buy their matcha as well and I really love the quality of it, but it is kinda pricy and I love the other brands just as much, so I tend to go for the more budget friendly options like the Rishi one – I mean, I go through quite a lot of matcha a month!

Matcha tea starter set

I can really recommend buying a cute little matcha tea starter set with a bamboo whisk, matcha bowl and spoon as well, they are of course not necessary but they do take the whole matcha tea experience to a whole new level – I really like this, this this and this one ♥

Hej Emma, tak for tippet!
